North Pond Restoration Update: September 9, 2022

North Pond Restoration Update: September 9, 2022

by Doug Widener

As baseball season heads towards home and the playoffs, North Pond’s restoration is also in the home stretch. Installation of permanent fencing along certain portions of the pond began today. In addition, temporary fencing to protect new (and soon-to-be planted) native plants and trees will be installed next week. As days turn cooler through September, you will see these areas planted so that the trees and plants can establish before things turn colder later this fall.

Another new limestone outcropping to provide up-close access to the pond was installed on its south end, providing wonderful vistas of the pond and the park. Additional Park amenities will be installed or repaired beginning next week through month’s end including new park benches, a new drinking fountain and path repairs.

The biggest additions next week will be new aerators going into the pond to keep water flowing and add additional oxygen to optimize water quality. In addition to the dredging which has already greatly improved water clarity, flow and quality, these aerators will help ensure the pond’s long-term health.

In closing, North Pond and Lincoln Park are public lands, owned by all and open to all. Each year on the last Saturday of September across the U.S. we celebrate our public lands on Public Lands Day, when thousands of volunteers in local, state, and national parks give back to these treasures through service. Join the Lincoln Park Conservancy on Saturday, September 24 for our Public Lands Day stewardship event at North Pond where we will be picking up litter and weeding invasive species to help better this gem of public space. We hope you will join us in caring for the Park that gives our city so much. Click here for more information or to participate.
